Woodruff key stocks are rounded machine keys. They have a half-moon shape for use on a mating half-mooned keyway that is milled near the end of the shaft. These woodruff keys, also known as half?moon keys, lock the mated gear / hub to the shaft by using their protruding flat face, allowing a tight fit. This prevents the independent movement of the attached hubs / gears / components from the rotating shaft / spindle and ensures better torque transfer. What are the advantages of woodruff keys?

  • Woodruff key stocks may be used over key slots of tapered shafts as they can get aligned via slight rotation in their seat.
  • The extra key depth in the shaft prevent slipping over the shafts.

How to install a woodruff key?

  • Press the key into the semi-circular key slot (milled into the shaft). Tap the flat, protruding key face using a hammer / mallet to seat the key firmly.
  • Allign the flat surface parallel to the shaft. The key face may extend above the shaft's surface to lock the mated component in place.
  • During installation, if the key slips out of the grooved key slot, then either the size is too small or the key is not press-fitted properly.
