Socket Set Screws

Socket set screws, also known as grub screws, are designed to secure a pulley or gear to a shaft and prevent any unwanted movement in the power transmission systems.   • Set screws join one component within another in applications where protrusions are not needed, thus providing smooth operation of the assembly.
  • Some screws have a signature headless body with internal threading in various dimensions that provide a secure and strong grip.

How do I remove a stuck set screw?

  • Apply a penetrating oil like WD-40 or PB Blaster to the screw and let it sit for a few minutes to loosen any corrosion or rust that may have caused the screw to stick.
  • Use a heat gun or propane torch to heat the area around the screw that will expand the metal and break the bond between the screw and the material it is threaded to.
  • Use a screw extractor to grip the head of the screw and turn it counterclockwise to remove the screw from the workpiece.
  • If the screw is protruding from the surface of the material, use a plier or wrench. Grip the head of the screw with the tool and turn it counterclockwise to remove it.
  • The user can also take the help of a drill to create a hole in the centre of the screw and then use a screw extractor to remove the remaining pieces.
