Drywall Screws

Drywall screws are ideal for fastening plasterboard to timber & metal. Raptor Supplies offers a wide range of drywall screws from DuraSpin, Grainger and Fabory. In addition to hanging new drywall sheets, these screws are also used for repairing nail pops when drywall nails loosen over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between coarse and fine drywall screws?

  • Coarse threaded drywall screws have wider and fewer threads, whereas fine threaded drywall screws have tighter threads.
  • Coarse threaded screws are designed for screwing into wood while fine threaded screws are suitable for screwing into metal.

What is the difference between bugle or wafer head screws?

  • Bugle head screws are ideal for drywall. They are countersunk & sit flush with plasterboards to provide an appealing finish.
  • Wafer head screws are used for constructing ceiling frames or metal wall systems and are not used for securing plasterboards.

What is the difference between collated and uncollated screws?

Collated screws are held together with a plastic strip designed to fit perfectly into an auto-feed screwdriver, while uncollated screws are comparatively loose and can be used without an auto-feed screwdriver.

Why do screws pop out of drywall and how to prevent it?

  • These screws pop out of drywall either because they were driven too deep or the studs have contracted / expanded.
  • To prevent this, avoid installing screws too deep. The screw head should be fully exposed outside the surface paper covering drywall panels.
  • Using a dehumidifier also prevents popping out of screws as it controls the amount of moisture in the air. By setting the dehumidifier at 40% to 50% relative humidity, the air won't be too dry or too humid, and thus, the studs will be less likely to contract and expand.

How to drive drywall screws?

  • Use a dedicated drywall screw gun with a drywall bit.
  • Select the drywall screw of appropriate size and ensure that the screw length is nearly 10 mm more than the drywall thickness.
  • Mark the stud locations.
  • The screws should be approximately 6.5 mm from the wall edge.
  • Use the sharp point of the screw for piercing the surface.
  • Place the drill-driver bit over the screw, turn On the drill and let the screw drive itself into the stud & drywall.
  • To prevent the screw from slipping, apply more force when it is inserted up to three-quarters.
  • Stop when the surface and screw head touch each other.
