Deck Screws

Deck screws are threaded fasteners that are suitable for joining planks, fencing & decks made of wooden, plastic or plastic-wood composites. They are used in woodworking, maintenance and repair applications. Raptor Supplies offers a wide range of these screws from Fabory, Senco, Grainger & GRK. These self-tapping screws require a pre-punched or drilled hole (depending on the hardness of the material) for installation / operation. Deck screws are generally used in outdoor environments and hence, have corrosion-resistant construction or coating on them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between deck screws and wood screws?

  • Head: Both deck & wood screws have a similar, flat countersunk surface. But, deck screws feature a larger head surface area for a greater load bearing capacity. This prevents the sinking of the fastener into the material.
  • Threading: Deck screws have sharper & deeper threading than wood screws for quickly cutting into the item.
  • Construction: Deck screws feature corrosion-resistant construction for withstanding harsh weather conditions. They are sturdy enough to handle larger weights compared to wood screws.

Is a pilot hole required for installing deck screws?

A pilot hole is necessary for installing deck screws on hardwood / crack-prone wood, or near the edge of a deck board. The main reason for pre-drilling holes is to prevent splintering of the wooden deck and stripping / breaking off of the screw.

How to install these deck screws?

  • Lay the deck on top of the frame.
  • Mark the hole centre where the screw is to be installed.
  • Drill bore a shaft clearance hole and a pilot hole, if required.
  • Place a deck screw at least 1 inch from the board's edge.
  • Press the drill tip attached to the driver tightly into the screwhead and turn the driver to fit the screw fully into the hole.

Why do some deck screws use washers?

Selected deck screws are equipped with washers to prevent contaminants from entering the screw hole and ensuring proper sealing.
